1ดาวิดทรงจัดกำลังพลและแต่งตั้งหัวหน้ากองร้อยกองพัน 2ดาวิดทรงส่งทหารออกไปโดยให้หนึ่งในสามอยู่ภายใต้การบังคับบัญชาของโยอาบ อีกหนึ่งในสามนำโดยอาบีชัยน้องชายของโยอาบบุตรนางเศรุยาห์ และอีกหนึ่งในสามบัญชาการโดยอิททัยชาวกัท ดาวิดตรัสกับเหล่าทหารว่า “เราจะออกรบร่วมกับพวกท่าน”3แต่พวกเขาทูลทัดทานว่า “ขอฝ่าพระบาทอย่าทรงออกรบเลย เพราะหากพวกเราต้องหนี และตายไปถึงครึ่งหนึ่ง พวกเขาก็ไม่แยแส แต่ฝ่าพระบาททรงมีค่าเท่ากับพวกข้าพระบาทหมื่นคน ▼

ดาวิดจึงประทับอยู่ที่ข้างประตูเมือง ขณะที่ทหารยกออกไปเป็นกองร้อยบ้างกองพันบ้าง 5กษัตริย์ตรัสสั่งโยอาบ อาบีชัย และอิททัยว่า “เพื่อเห็นแก่เรา ขอให้ปฏิบัติต่ออับซาโลมอย่างละมุนละม่อมเถิด” กองทหารทั้งหมดก็ได้ยินคำสั่งของกษัตริย์เกี่ยวกับอับซาโลมโดยทั่วหน้า
6กองทหารจึงเคลื่อนออกไปกลางทุ่งเพื่อสู้รบกับอิสราเอลและสงครามเริ่มขึ้นที่ป่าเอฟราอิม 7กองทัพอิสราเอลถูกทหารของดาวิดบดขยี้ มีผู้บาดเจ็บล้มตายมากมายถึงสองหมื่นคน 8สงครามขยายไปทั่วแถบนั้นและคนที่ตายในป่ามีมากกว่าคนที่ตายในสงคราม

10ทหารคนหนึ่งของดาวิดเห็นจึงมาแจ้งโยอาบว่า “ข้าพเจ้าเห็นอับซาโลมห้อยอยู่ที่ต้นโอ๊ก”
11โยอาบถามว่า “เจ้าเห็นเขาอยู่ที่นั่นแล้วทำไมไม่ฆ่าเขา ถ้าทำ ป่านนี้เราคงตกรางวัลเจ้าอย่างงามด้วยเงินหนัก 10 เชเขล ▼

กับเข็มขัดนักรบแล้วล่ะ” 12ทหารคนนั้นตอบว่า “ถึงจะให้เงินข้าพเจ้า 1,000 เชเขล ข้าพเจ้าก็จะไม่แตะต้องพระโอรส เราทุกคนต่างได้ยินเรื่องที่กษัตริย์ตรัสกับท่าน และอาบีชัยกับอิททัยว่า ‘เพื่อเห็นแก่เรา ▼

16แล้วโยอาบก็เป่าแตรเขาสัตว์หยุดพวกเขาไว้ ทหารจึงเลิกตามล่ากองทัพอิสราเอล 17พวกเขาโยนศพอับซาโลมลงในหลุมลึกในป่า แล้วสุมก้อนหินทับเป็นกองพะเนิน ฝ่ายทหารอิสราเอลต่างหนีกลับบ้าน
18ขณะอับซาโลมยังมีชีวิต เขาได้ตั้งเสาไว้เป็นอนุสรณ์ที่หุบเขากษัตริย์เพราะเขาคิดว่า “เราไม่มีลูกชายจะสืบนาม” อับซาโลมตั้งชื่อเสานั้นตามชื่อของตน เขาเรียกกันว่า “อนุสรณ์ของอับซาโลม” ตราบจนทุกวันนี้

19อาหิมาอัสบุตรศาโดกกล่าวว่า “ให้ข้าพเจ้าวิ่งไปกราบทูลกษัตริย์เถิดว่าองค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าทรงช่วยพระองค์จากศัตรูแล้ว”20โยอาบทัดทานว่า “อย่าเลย เจ้าไม่ใช่คนที่จะนำข่าวในวันนี้ ไว้โอกาสหน้าก็แล้วกัน เพราะพระโอรสสิ้นพระชนม์แล้ว”
21แล้วโยอาบจึงพูดกับชาวคูชคนหนึ่งว่า “จงไปทูลรายงานสิ่งที่เจ้าเห็นให้กษัตริย์ทรงทราบ” เขาก็คำนับโยอาบแล้ววิ่งออกไป
22อาหิมาอัสบุตรศาโดกกล่าวกับโยอาบว่า “แต่ให้ข้าพเจ้าวิ่งตามชาวคูชคนนั้นไปเถิด”
โยอาบตอบว่า “อย่าเลยลูกเอ๋ย ทำไมถึงอยากไป? ไม่มีข่าวอะไรที่จะทำให้เจ้าได้รับบำเหน็จ”
23เขาอ้อนวอนว่า “เอาเถิด ข้าพเจ้าอยากวิ่งไป”
โยอาบจึงพูดว่า “วิ่งไปสิ!” อาหิมาอัสจึงวิ่งลัดผ่านที่ราบ ▼

แซงชาวคูชไป24ดาวิดประทับอยู่ระหว่างประตูเมืองชั้นนอกและชั้นใน เมื่อคนยามปีนบันไดขึ้นไปยังจุดที่ตนรักษาการณ์บนกำแพง เขามองออกไปเห็นชายคนหนึ่งวิ่งมา 25เขาจึงร้องทูลให้ดาวิดทรงทราบ
ดาวิดตรัสว่า “ถ้ามีคนเดียวคงจะมาแจ้งข่าวดี” ขณะที่ผู้สื่อสารวิ่งใกล้เข้ามาทุกที
26คนยามมองเห็นอีกคนวิ่งมาจึงร้องบอกคนเฝ้าประตูว่า “นั่น! มาอีกคนหนึ่งแล้ว”
กษัตริย์ตรัสว่า “คงจะมาแจ้งข่าวดีเหมือนกัน”
27คนยามทูลว่า “คนแรกน่าจะเป็นอาหิมาอัสบุตรศาโดก”
กษัตริย์ตรัสว่า “เขาเป็นคนดี นำข่าวดีมาบอก”
28อาหิมาอัสร้องทูลดาวิดว่า “ทุกอย่างเรียบร้อยดี” เขาหมอบกราบลงต่อหน้าดาวิดและทูลว่า “สรรเสริญพระยาห์เวห์พระเจ้าของฝ่าพระบาท พระองค์ได้ประทานบรรดาผู้ที่บังอาจต่อกรกับฝ่าพระบาทแก่ฝ่าพระบาทแล้ว”
29ดาวิดตรัสถามว่า “ลูกอับซาโลมปลอดภัยดีใช่ไหม?”
อาหิมาอัสทูลว่า “ตอนที่ท่านโยอาบใช้ให้ข้าพระบาทมา เห็นผู้คนโกลาหล แต่ไม่ทราบว่าเรื่องอะไร”
30ดาวิดตรัสว่า “รออยู่ตรงนี้ก่อน” อาหิมาอัสจึงก้าวหลบเข้าไป
31จากนั้นคนชาวเมืองคูชก็มาถึงและทูลว่า “ข้าแต่กษัตริย์ ข้าพระบาทนำข่าวดีมากราบทูล! วันนี้องค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าทรงช่วยฝ่าพระบาทให้รอดจากเงื้อมมือของบรรดาผู้คิดคดทรยศต่อฝ่าพระบาท”
32ดาวิดตรัสถามว่า “ลูกอับซาโลมปลอดภัยดีใช่ไหม?”
ชายชาวคูชผู้นั้นทูลว่า “ขอให้ศัตรูทั้งปวงและผู้คิดร้ายต่อฝ่าพระบาทเป็นเช่นโอรสองค์นี้เถิด”
33ดาวิดเสียพระทัยอย่างยิ่ง เสด็จขึ้นสู่ที่ประทับเหนือประตูเมือง ทรงกันแสงไปตลอดทางและทรงคร่ำครวญว่า “โอ อับซาโลมลูกของพ่อ! ลูกของพ่อ ลูกของพ่ออับซาโลมเอ๋ย! พ่อน่าจะตายแทนลูก โอ อับซาโลม ลูกของพ่อ! ลูกของพ่อ!”

How do I do a word study?

When you click on a word, the detailed lexicon opens with:
'Vocabulary' Bibles link the translation to Greek & Hebrew. So far, only some Bibles have this vocabulary feature. They are shown in the Bible select screen with the letter 'V'.
It is the number of occurrences of a word in the Bible. Click on it to see them all in the selected Bible(s).
This reveals different forms for some words and names. These details are often interesting to scholars, eg the word 'beginning' in Genesis.
