Ehud en Eglon
1De Here liet de volken in het land blijven om de nieuwe generatie Israëlieten, die de oorlogen met Kanaän niet had meegemaakt, op de proef te stellen. 2Want de Here wilde de Israëlieten die geen oorlog hadden meegemaakt, leren vechten tegen de vijand. 3Die vijanden waren de Filistijnen (vijf steden), de Kanaänieten, de Sidoniërs en de Chiwwieten, die in de bergen van de Libanon woonden, vanaf de berg Baäl-Hermon tot de weg naar Hamat. 4Deze volken dienden om de nieuwe generatie Israëlieten op de proef te stellen, om te zien of zij zouden luisteren naar de geboden die de Here hun voorouders door Mozes had gegeven. 5De Israëlieten woonden dus midden tussen de Kanaänieten, Hethieten, Amorieten, Perizzieten, Chiwwieten en Jebusieten. 6De jonge mannen van Israël trouwden echter met meisjes uit die volken en Israëlitische meisjes werden aan niet-Israëlitische mannen uitgehuwelijkt. Al gauw vereerden de Israëlieten ook hun afgoden. 7Zo deden zij wat de Here had verboden, zij vergaten de Here, hun God, en aanbaden Baäl en afgodsbeelden van Asjera. 8Toen werd de Here toornig op Israël en liet toe dat koning Kusan-Risataïm van Mesopotamië hen overwon. Acht jaar lang werden zij door hem overheerst. 9Maar toen Israël tot de Here om hulp riep, gaf de Here iemand om hen te verlossen. Het was Kalebs neef Otniël, de zoon van Kalebs jongere broer Kenaz. 10De Geest van de Here kwam over Otniël en hij stelde in Israël orde op zaken. Vervolgens bracht hij zijn leger in het veld tegen koning Kusan-Risataïm. Daarna heersten er rust en vrede in het land, in de veertig jaar onder Otniëls leiding. Maar na Otniëls dood begon het volk Israël opnieuw tegen de Here te zondigen. Daarom zette de Here koning Eglon van Moab aan om een deel van Israël te overwinnen. 13Deze koning sloot een verbond met de Ammonieten en de Amalekieten. Gezamenlijk versloegen zij de Israëlieten en namen de stad Jericho in, die ook wel Stad van de Palmbomen wordt genoemd. 14Gedurende de volgende achttien jaar moesten de Israëlieten koning Eglon van Moab dienen. 15Maar toen Israël de Here te hulp riep, stuurde Hij een redder: Ehud, de zoon van Gera, een Benjaminiet die linkshandig was. Ehud bracht elk jaar Israëls belastinggeld naar koning Eglon. 16Toen hij deze tocht weer eens ondernam, maakte hij een tweesnijdend zwaard van nog geen halve meter lang en bevestigde dat onder zijn kleren, op zijn rechterheup. 17 ▼▼ This verse is empty because in this translation its contents have been moved to form part of verse Dom. 3:19.

Nadat Ehud het geld had afgedragen aan koning Eglon—die vreselijk dik was—begon hij aan de terugreis. Maar buiten de stad, bij de gebeeldhouwde stenen in de buurt van Gilgal, stuurde hij zijn metgezellen verder en keerde zelf alleen naar de koning terug. ‘Majesteit, ik heb een geheime boodschap voor u,’ zei hij. De koning stuurde onmiddellijk alle aanwezigen weg, zodat Ehud onder vier ogen met hem kon spreken. 20Ehud liep op de koning toe, die helemaal alleen in de koele bovenzaal zat, en zei tegen hem: ‘Het is een boodschap van God!’ Eglon stond meteen op van zijn troon om de boodschap aan te horen. 21Op hetzelfde moment greep Ehud met zijn linkerhand onder zijn kleren, trok het zwaard van zijn rechterheup en stak het diep in koning Eglons buik, tot het heft toe. 22 ▼▼ This verse is empty because in this translation its contents have been moved to form part of verse Dom. 3:23.

Het vet sloot zich eromheen, omdat Ehud het er niet uittrok. Daarop vergrendelde hij de deur van de bovenzaal, verliet het vertrek via een achteruitgang en verdween langs een galerij naar buiten. 24Nauwelijks was Ehud buiten of de dienaren van de koning kwamen bij de bovenzaal kijken, maar troffen de deur op slot. Ze wachtten een tijdje en dachten dat de koning graag een poosje in de koele bovenkamer alleen wilde zijn. 25Maar toen het langer begon te duren en de koning nog steeds niet tevoorschijn kwam, werden zijn dienaren ongerust en haalden een sleutel. Zij maakten de deur open en vonden hun heer dood op de grond. 26Ondertussen was Ehud langs de gebeeldhouwde stenen ontsnapt en veilig en wel in Seïra aangekomen. 27Daar, op de bergen van Efraïm, blies hij op de hoorn om het volk op te roepen voor de strijd. Er verzamelde zich een leger bij hem en onder zijn bevel daalden de strijders van de bergen af. 28‘Volg mij!’ riep Ehud. ‘De Here heeft uw vijanden, de Moabieten, in uw macht gegeven!’ Het leger trok naar de doorwaadbare plaatsen van de Jordaan aan de weg naar Moab, bezette die en liet geen mens meer oversteken. 29Toen raakten de Israëlieten slaags met de Moabieten en doodden ongeveer tienduizend sterke, weerbare mannen, zonder iemand te laten ontsnappen. 30Zo werd Moab die dag door Israël overwonnen en heersten rust en vrede in het land gedurende de volgende tachtig jaar. 31De richter die na Ehud optrad, heette Samgar. Hij was een zoon van Anat. Samgar doodde eens zeshonderd Filistijnen met een ossenstok en verloste Israël op die manier.

When you click on a word, the detailed lexicon opens with:
'Vocabulary' Bibles link the translation to Greek & Hebrew. So far, only some Bibles have this vocabulary feature. They are shown in the Bible select screen with the letter 'V'.
It is the number of occurrences of a word in the Bible. Click on it to see them all in the selected Bible(s).
This reveals different forms for some words and names. These details are often interesting to scholars, eg the word 'beginning' in Genesis.
