Hij was vijfentwintig jaar toen hij koning werd en regeerde zestien jaar vanuit Jeruzalem. 1Na zijn dood werd hij in Jeruzalem begraven. Zijn zoon Achaz volgde hem op. 2Achaz, koning van Israël
3Achaz was twintig jaar toen hij koning werd en regeerde zestien jaar vanuit Jeruzalem. Hij was echter een goddeloze koning en leek in niets op zijn voorvader koning David. 4Hij volgde namelijk het slechte voorbeeld van de koningen in het naburige Israël en maakte afgodsbeelden van Baäl. 5Hij ging naar het dal Ben-Hinnom, niet alleen om reukwerk te verbranden voor de afgodsbeelden, maar ook om er zijn eigen zonen in het vuur te offeren. Dat waren dezelfde gruwelijke zonden die de heidense volken deden die de Here uit het land had verjaagd om plaats te maken voor Israël. 6Ja, hij offerde en verbrandde reukwerk in de afgodentempels op de heuvels en onder elke groene boom. 7Daarom zorgde de Here God dat de koning van Syrië hem versloeg en grote aantallen van zijn onderdanen deporteerde naar Damascus. Bovendien verloren grote delen van zijn troepen het leven in de strijd tegen het leger van Israël. 8Op één dag doodde Remaljahuʼs zoon Pekach honderdtwintigduizend van Achazʼ moedigste strijders. En dat kwam alleen doordat zij zich hadden afgekeerd van de Here, de God van hun voorouders. 9Zichri, een geducht krijgsman uit Efraïm, doodde Maäseja, de zoon van de koning, de hofmaarschalk Azrikam en Elkana, na de koning de machtigste man in Juda. 10De Israëlitische troepen namen tweehonderdduizend Judese vrouwen en kinderen gevangen en bemachtigden een enorme buit. Dat alles brachten zij naar Samaria. 11Maar in Samaria bevond zich een profeet van de Here, Oded genaamd, hij ging het terugkerende leger tegemoet. ‘Kijk,’ riep hij. ‘De Here, de God van uw voorouders, was toornig op Juda en liet toe dat u de overwinning behaalde. U hebt hen echter genadeloos afgeslacht en daarin bent u veel te ver gegaan. 12En bent u nu van plan deze inwoners van Juda en Jeruzalem tot slaven te maken? Maar hoe zit het dan met uw eigen zonden tegen de Here, uw God? 13Luister naar mij en laat deze verwanten van u naar huis terugkeren, want de verschrikkelijke toorn van de Here is nu al tegen u gericht.’ 14Enkele vooraanstaande mannen van Efraïm vielen hem bij. Onder hen bevonden zich Azarja, de zoon van Jochanan, Berechja, de zoon van Mesillemot, Jechizkia, de zoon van Sallum, en Amasa, de zoon van Chadlai. 15‘U mag die gevangenen niet hier houden!’ vonden zij. ‘Als we dat doen, maken we onze schuld tegenover de Here alleen maar groter en stapelen we de ene zonde op de andere. We hebben zonder dat al genoeg schuld ten opzichte van God, en zijn toorn is nu al op ons gericht.’ 16Daarop lieten de soldaten de gevangenen vrij en gaven de bezittingen terug in het bijzijn van de officieren en het volk. 17De vier bovengenoemde mannen deelden meteen buitgemaakte kleding uit aan de vrouwen en kinderen die het nodig hadden en gaven hun bovendien schoeisel, voedsel en drinken. Ook behandelden zij sommigen met geneeskrachtige zalf. Zieken en bejaarden werden op ezels gezet en allen werden teruggebracht naar hun gezinnen in Jericho, de stad van de palmbomen. In diezelfde tijd vroeg koning Achaz van Juda de koning van Assyrië om hulp in de strijd tegen de legers van Edom. Edom was namelijk Juda binnengevallen en had vele inwoners gevangen en meegenomen. 20Tegelijkertijd waren de Filistijnen het laagland en het gebied in het zuiden binnengevallen. Zij hadden de steden Bet-Semes, Ajjalon, Gederot, Socho, Timna en Gimzo en alle bij die steden behorende dorpen veroverd en waren er gaan wonen. 21De Here liet Juda op die manier merken dat de goddeloze daden van koning Achaz van Israël niet ongestraft werden gelaten. Hij had heel Juda op het zondige pad gebracht en was ontrouw geworden aan de Here. 22Maar toen koning Tiglatpileser van Assyrië arriveerde, bracht hij koning Achaz juist in moeilijkheden in plaats van hem te helpen. 23Achaz gaf Tiglatpileser een groot geschenk, bestaande uit schatten uit de tempel, uit het koninklijk paleis en uit het bezit van de adel. Het mocht echter niet baten, de Assyrische koning kwam hem niet te hulp. 24Door al deze tegenslagen werd koning Achazʼ ontrouw nog erger. 25Hij offerde aan de goden van Damascus die hem hadden verslagen, want hij meende dat als deze goden de koningen van Syrië hadden geholpen, zij hetzelfde met hem zouden doen als hij hun offers zou aanbieden. Maar dit werd juist de ondergang van hem en zijn volk. 26Achaz bracht de gouden voorwerpen uit de tempel bijeen en nam ze mee. Daarna sloot hij de tempel, zodat niemand daar meer kon aanbidden, en plaatste in Jeruzalem heidense altaren op alle straathoeken. 27Hetzelfde deed hij in alle andere steden van Juda, waardoor hij zich uiteraard de toorn van de Here, de God van zijn voorouders, op de hals haalde.

When you click on a word, the detailed lexicon opens with:
'Vocabulary' Bibles link the translation to Greek & Hebrew. So far, only some Bibles have this vocabulary feature. They are shown in the Bible select screen with the letter 'V'.
It is the number of occurrences of a word in the Bible. Click on it to see them all in the selected Bible(s).
This reveals different forms for some words and names. These details are often interesting to scholars, eg the word 'beginning' in Genesis.
