Gedurende de oorlog bij Gat was er een andere reus die Israël beledigde en uitdaagde. Deze had zes vingers aan elke hand en zes tenen aan elke voet. Zijn vader was overigens ook een reus. Maar Davids neef Jonatan, de zoon van zijn broer Sima, doodde hem. 1Deze reuzen waren nakomelingen van het bekende reuzengeslacht van de Refaïeten uit Gat en werden gedood door David en zijn strijders. 2 De volkstelling van David
3Toen ontketende Satan een ramp over Israël, want hij verleidde David tot een volkstelling. 4‘Houd een volkstelling door het hele land en bezorg mij de uitkomsten,’ droeg David Joab en de andere leiders op. 5Maar Joab protesteerde: ‘Zelfs al zou de Here zijn volk nog honderdmaal groter maken—wat ik van harte wens—zouden zij dan ook niet allemaal uw onderdanen zijn? Waarom vraagt u ons dan dit te doen? Waarom laadt u deze schuld op Israël?’ 6Maar de koning hield voet bij stuk en Joab voerde zijn bevel uit, hij reisde heel Israël door en keerde daarna terug naar Jeruzalem. 7Het totale bevolkingsaantal dat hij opgaf, omvatte één miljoen honderdduizend strijdbare mannen in Israël en vierhonderdzeventigduizend in Juda. 8Maar de stammen van Levi en Benjamin telde hij expres niet mee, omdat het hem nog steeds dwarszat dat de koning hem had opgedragen dit te doen. 9Maar deze volkstelling was een zondige daad in de ogen van God en Hij strafte Israël ervoor. 10Maar David zei tegen God: ‘Ik ben degene die heeft gezondigd. ‘Ga David het volgende vertellen: “De Here geeft u een keus uit drie dingen. Welke van de drie kiest u? 14U hebt de keuze uit drie jaar hongersnood, drie maanden verwoesting door uw vijanden of drie dagen de pest, waarmee de engel als met een zwaard van de Here overal in het land vernietiging aanricht. Denk erover na en laat mij dan weten welk antwoord ik moet doorgeven aan degene die mij heeft gestuurd.” ’ 15‘Dit is een vreselijk moeilijke beslissing,’ vond David, ‘maar ik val liever in handen van de Here dan in de macht van mensen, want Gods genade is erg groot.’ 16Zo strafte de Here Israël met de pest, die aan zeventigduizend mensen het leven kostte. 17Ook stuurde God een engel om Jeruzalem te verwoesten, maar Hij bedacht Zich al gauw en gaf de verwoestende engel het bevel: ‘Stop! Zo is het genoeg!’ Dat deed Hij terwijl zijn engel al bij de dorsvloer van de Jebusiet Ornan stond. 18Toen David de engel van de Here met getrokken zwaard tussen hemel en aarde zag staan, wijzend in de richting van Jeruzalem, trokken hij en de leiders van Israël rouwkleding aan en vielen voor de Here op de grond neer. 19David zei tegen de Here: ‘Ik ben degene die heeft gezondigd door het bevel voor die volkstelling te geven. Maar wat hebben deze schapen misdaan? O Here, mijn God, straf mij en mijn familie, maar tref uw volk niet!’ 20De engel van de Here beval de profeet Gad dat hij David opdracht moest geven een altaar voor de Here te bouwen bij de dorsvloer van de Jebusiet Ornan. 21 ▼▼ This verse is empty because in this translation its contents have been moved to form part of verse 1.Krøn. 21:20.

David zocht Ornan op, die op dat moment net bezig was zijn tarwe te dorsen. Toen Ornan zich omdraaide zag hij de engel, waarop zijn vier zonen wegrenden en zich verborgen. 23Toen Ornan de koning zag naderen, verliet hij zijn dorsvloer en boog neer op de grond voor koning David. 24David zei tegen hem: ‘Laat mij deze dorsvloer voor de volle prijs van u kopen, ik wil er een altaar voor de Here op bouwen om de pest te laten stoppen.’ 25‘Neem mijn dorsvloer maar, mijn heer, en gebruik hem voor wat u maar wilt,’ antwoordde Ornan. ‘Ik geef u ook de ossen. Die kunnen dienstdoen als brandoffers. Gebruik het dorsgereedschap maar als hout voor het vuur en de tarwe voor het spijsoffer. Ik geef het u allemaal.’ 26‘Nee,’ antwoordde koning David, ‘ik wil het voor de volle prijs van u kopen. Ik kan uw eigendom niet aannemen en het zo aan de Here geven. Ik wil geen brandoffer brengen dat mij helemaal niets heeft gekost.’ 27David betaalde Ornan zeshonderd goudstukken 28en bouwde op die plaats een altaar voor de Here. Op het altaar bracht hij brandoffers en vredeoffers, waarna hij tot de Here riep, die hem antwoordde met vuur uit de hemel op het altaar. 29Toen gaf de Here de engel bevel zijn zwaard in de schede te steken. 30Toen David zag dat de Here zijn gebed had verhoord, bracht hij Hem daar enkele offers.

It is the number of occurrences of a word in the Bible. Click on it to see them all in the selected Bible(s).
This reveals different forms for some words and names. These details are often interesting to scholars, eg the word 'beginning' in Genesis.
